Utah-based health network MountainStar Healthcare announced that five of its facilities were recognized as Blue Distinction Centers+ for maternity care. The designation comes Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS), and honors hospitals proven history of delivering exceptional care and results.
Salt Lake City’s St. Mark’s Hospital, Draper’s Lone Peak Hospital, Ogden’s Ogden Regional Medical Center, Payson’s Mountain View Hospital and Logan’s Cache Valley Hospital all earned the “plus”-level recognition, which means they “demonstrate more affordable care in addition to quality care, treatment expertise and better overall patient results,” per BCBS.
“It’s such a privilege to be able to welcome nearly 9,000 babies each year across our Utah network,” said Jenn Gibson-Speicher, who leads MountainStar’s women’s and children’s programs. “We are honored that so many families trust us with such a life-changing experience, and we’re proud of what this recognition says about our team’s commitment to caring for mothers and their little ones.”
According to BCBS, facilities who earn the BDC designation demonstrate lower episiotomies, fewer elective deliveries and lower cesarean births. The BDC+ providers meet those same quality criteria, but go a step further. They also deliver affordable maternity care, with overall average savings of 21%, according to a recent program survey.
Because of this designation, certain federal employees who are insured by BCBS may have no out-of-pocket liability for maternity services at the designated facilities.

“All of the Utah centers to receive this designation are in our MountainStar Healthcare family,” Gibson-Speicher continued, “which shows why women in Northern Utah continue to choose our hospitals for their big day.”
