MountainStar Healthcare hospitals recognized for nursing excellence
Nursing teams at six MountainStar Healthcare hospitals were recognized for nursing excellence, the Utah-based health network announced.
In all, eight nursing units receive recognition as part of the 2024 HCA Healthcare Unit of Distinction (UOD) Awards, an annual program that recognizes and rewards exemplary nursing units across HCA Healthcare’s sites of care. The designation is achieved through measurable, exemplary performance in the strategic areas of advocacy and leadership, consistency in nursing practice and operations and leveraging scale to improve patient care.
“True innovation happens at the bedside and the Unit of Distinction program celebrates the best of HCA Healthcare. Today we recognize and celebrate exemplary nursing units who raise the standard of nursing excellence,” said Sammie Mosier, DHA, MA, BSN, NE-BC, senior vice president and chief nurse executive of HCA Healthcare. “Thanks to all of the nurses who work each day to lead the way, delivering excellent care to patients and support to our community of nurses.”
Five Utah nursing teams were Unit of Distinction recipients for being in the top five percent of all HCA Healthcare units in their area of care: the intensive care and obstetrics/gynecology units at Mountain View Hospital (Payson); the emergency departments at Lone Peak Hospital (Draper) and Cache Valley Hospital (North Logan); and the pediatric intensive care unit at Timpanogos Regional Hospital (Orem).
Additionally, three units were recognized as Unit of Distinction Honorable Mentions for performance in the top 5-10%: the labor and delivery units at Mountain View and Ogden Regional Medical Center, as well as the orthopedic & spine unit at Bountiful’s Lakeview Hospital.
“Our highly skilled and compassionate nurses are at the heart of the care we deliver to Utahns,” said Sabrina Braun, DNP, MHA, RN-BC, the chief nurse executive for MountainStar Healthcare and its sister facilities in Idaho and Alaska. "We’re so proud of the nursing teams who achieved this recognition, and of our entire care team for the pride they take in serving patients, communities and each other.”
In a ceremony broadcast from HCA Healthcare’s headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee on Tuesday, April 15, 2025 a total of 197 nursing units were recognized as top-performing nursing units. Units of Distinction are categorized in the top five percent of all HCA Healthcare medical surgical, critical care, emergency services, surgical services, behavioral health, women’s and children’s nursing units, pediatrics/PICU and inpatient rehabilitation units. The top six to ten percent of all HCA Healthcare units earned honorable mention designations.
Launched in 2015, the Unit of Distinction Awards are an essential component of HCA Healthcare’s strategic nursing plan. With approximately 2,400 sites of care, HCA Healthcare’s more than 99,000 nurses have abundant opportunities to choose work across a wide spectrum of clinical and non-clinical settings. HCA Healthcare supports and invests in nursing with leading-edge technologies and increased access to clinical education and professional development opportunities to help make HCA Healthcare a premier career destination for nurses.
