An unexpected delivery on vacation

When Baby Spencer came two weeks early while on vacation, Haeli got the care she needed at Cache Valley Hospital.

When a trip to Bear Lake turned into active labor for Haeli Barlow, vacation plans quickly turned from relaxing by pristine blue water to a 3 a.m. jaunt through the winding roads of Logan Canyon to Cache Valley Hospital.

Haeli and her husband, Carlyn, had been in Bear Lake for Raspberry Days — getting in one last little getaway before Baby Spencer was to be born in two weeks. This past Saturday, Haeli started having some contractions, but since Baby Spencer wasn’t due for a couple more weeks she didn’t immediately think it was active labor. But as the night went on, she felt they should make their way to the hospital to be sure.

Haeli and Carlyn live in Bluffdale (and Haeli is also a colleague at our sister facility, Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem), so they knew they were too far to drive all the way back home. So they picked Cache Valley Hospital, which was just under an hour drive away from where they were staying in Garden City.

“When we got to Cache Valley Hospital and they checked me, I was already dilated to a 7. They told me that we weren’t going anywhere — our new baby was on his way.” And after a long five hours of pushing, Baby Spencer made his debut.

Haeli and Carlyn are very grateful for the level of care they received at Cache Valley Hospital, especially given the added level of stress of delivering far from home. “We absolutely adored all of our nurses, not to mention the newborn photoshoot and the amazing food from the dietary staff! Tyra was my nurse through the entire labor and delivery and was a trooper, sticking it out with me for so many hours. After Spencer was born he wasn’t breathing for a few minutes and gave us a scare, and Tiff was able to get him breathing. We just loved our experience and are so grateful to everyone.”
