Robot-assisted surgery

Our expert surgeons work to remain at the forefront of surgical technology. Because of this, our hospital offers access to robot-assisted surgical procedures when possible. Our surgical teams use this advanced, minimally invasive technology across numerous specialties, including general, gynecologic and urologic surgical procedures.

How robotic surgery works

When using robot-assisted technology, the surgeon sits at a console in an operating room—only a few feet away from the patient. They are guided by vibrant, 3D images that magnify the surgical site. This allows the surgeon to more clearly see the patient's internal organs, as well as vital nerves and blood supply surrounding the organs.

At the console, our surgeons use hand and foot controls to precisely manipulate each of the robot's four arms and the tiny surgical instruments they hold. The robotic surgical technology enables surgeons to repair or remove diseased organs with minimal trauma to the patient's body.

Benefits of robotic surgery

Robotic technology offers numerous benefits to patients, including:

  • Faster recovery, less time spent in the hospital and faster return to normal activities than patients who undergo conventional, invasive surgery
  • Less trauma, reduced pain and less scarring
  • One- or two-centimeter incisions versus a six- to 10-inch incision with open surgery
  • Significantly less invasive and more precise procedures

Robotic surgeries we offer

We provide patients access to a variety of robot-assisted surgical procedures. Some of our specialties include:

Robotic acid reflux surgery

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common disorder in which food or liquid travels backward from the stomach to the esophagus. GERD is often chronic, which means that once you develop this condition, you may experience recurring episodes for the rest of your life.

If you experience persistent GERD, you may be a candidate for robot-assisted Nissen fundoplication. Nissen fundoplication is a surgical procedure used to treat severe GERD when medications and nonsurgical treatments do not reduce symptoms.

Robotic hysterectomy

Physicians perform hysterectomies to treat a wide variety of medical conditions, including endometriosis and uterine fibroids.

Robotic nephrectomy

The kidneys are essential organs that filter waste and fluid from the bloodstream. When the kidneys are no longer functioning properly, doctors may recommend surgery to remove all or part of the kidney. The removal of the entire kidney is called a radical nephrectomy. A partial nephrectomy aims to remove only the diseased part of your kidney and spare the healthy, functioning kidney tissue.

A nephrectomy may also be used to remove a healthy kidney that will be transplanted to another person. We offer robot-assisted nephrectomies that allow for a faster, safer and more precise procedure.

Robotic prostatectomy

When a patient has prostate cancer, a prostatectomy—the removal of the prostate—may be required. During a prostatectomy, the doctor removes the cancerous prostate gland and related structures.

Robot-assisted prostatectomy is one of many treatment options for men facing prostate cancer. Other treatments may include cryotherapy, hormone and radiation therapy and watchful waiting/active surveillance.

Insurance coverage for robotic surgery

Our robotic surgical procedures are categorized as robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery. This means that insurance providers that cover minimally invasive surgery should generally cover robotic surgery as well. This is true for widely held insurance plans, such as Medicare. It is important to note that your coverage will depend on your plan and benefits package.
